I’m planning on buying an inflatable mattress for my guests. I don’t need it for camping. And I don’t exactly fancy the idea of fiddling with a pump of all things. Even an electric one, much less one purely mechanical. Is there a way to get a mattress capable of inflating itself rather than connect and disconnect the pump manually?

That’s quite understandable. It’s not easy to inflate a mattress with a manual pump. It takes time, and not only that, it’s tiresome as well. An electric mattress, on the other hand, is not quite as unpopular. They actually might do their job very fast. Still, there are some disadvantages to them as well. 
Not the fiddling part, I don’t think many people would mind that. But it might take some time to find it, they can also be lost. And, on top of that, you can’t leave them on through the night. They just don’t work like that.
But self-inflating mattresses are a little bit different. Some of them actually have several firmness levels, maintained by the built-in pumps. You can find them in this review on air mattresses.
